Fatalis, the black dragon of Castle Schrade, is a special quest given to exceptional hunters. In the original Monster Hunter for the Playstation 2, one must first reach Hunter Rank(HR) 19 to unlock the beast, though it was rumored that the hunter must have also slain atleast twenty Rathalos and Rathian as well as the previously stated pre-requisites. In following titles, the conditions to unlock the Quest vary, in Monster Hunter Freedom, the only requirement was reaching a specific Hunter Rank. In Monster Hunter Freedom 2 however, one must complete all training quests and a significant amount of Guild Hall Quests.
In Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, and Freedom 2 the creatures also come up as download event quests. The Quests are structured differently however in that unlike the unlocked four-round fights, they are fifty-minutes and only one round. They are also available in G-ranked quests where they are much stronger.
Fatalis has three variations: The standard Black Fatalis, found at Castle Schrade, the Crimson Fatalis, fought in a volcanic battlefield and the white Ancestor Fatalis which is fought at the top of an Ancient Tower. Each is different in more than color and appearance as each dragon has a different attack pattern and move set.
