[edit] About the game
Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G is the 3rd instalment of the PSP Monster Hunter Series currently only available in Japan. With this new instalment comes many new monsters, quests, weapons and armours and areas. All of these new features add many more hours of game play to the already incredibly long game.
[edit] New monsters
Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G features a series of new monsters to the game. Some from Monster Hunter Frontier, while others being completely new to the series.
The Queen Vespoid is a significantly larger and stronger Vespoid, see only when a number of Vespoid have been slain in battle.
The Hypnoc, referred to as the "Sleep Bird", is much like a Yian Kut-Ku, being of the same model structure and attacking pattern, yet it has the ability to put its enemies to sleep with it's projectile attacks. The Hypnoc also uses a lunge attack instead of a charge, and it can lunge up to 3 times.
The Naruga is a meaner, faster, more agile version of a Tigrex. It can move much more quickly and turn much faster and with greater ease, unlike the Tigrex and it tends to slide while turning. The Naruga also uses it's spiked tail more frequently, and its tail range is amazingly long.
The Ucamulbas is derived as an "Ice" Version of the Akantor. It can be faced in a special "Snowy Mountains Arena" as a final boss in the game.
The Volganos is much like a Plesioth, however dwelling in the lava of Volcano rather than open water.
The Yamatsukami is a giant, green octopus-like monster but classified as an Elder Dragon despite its appearance.
Along with these new monsters are harder versions of old monsters. Monsters with harder versions are:
These also include colour variations for Daimyo Hermitaur(Purple), Shogun Ceanataur(Red), Congalala(Green) and Blangonga(Sand).
[edit] New areas
One new area has been made for 2nd G, they also brought back the first-generation maps from Monster Hunter Freedom. The new map is the Rainforest, from Monster Hunter Frontier. A brand new Moat Arena has been created created for a special download quest.
[edit] Weapons and Armor/Armour
Many weapons can be upgraded again. And with the addition of a lot more new weapons(and more G weapons after defeating Ucamulbas) the amount of weapons that you can create is unbelievable. Another new feature for some of the new weapons is dual element for dual swords. This enables you to have to different elemental attributes in one weapon. e.g. Ice and Fire. There are also many new armors/armours that have been put in for all the new monsters. Along with this are new armor/armour spheres called King Armor/armour Sphere and True Armor/Armour Sphere this allows you to further improve your armor/armour. However, some armour skills and requirements have been changed. e.g. Guard +2 requires 20 points to activate, instead of just 15. Akantor Armour no longer gives High Grade Earplug even when gemmed.
[edit] Quests
Now after High Rank (HR 4-6) there is G-Rank (HR 7-9). With this new attainable hunter ranks come many new quests with new monsters and areas.
[edit] Online
Another great aspect of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G is the online co-op. using Ad-Hoc you can play with 3 other of your friends to form 4 player hunting parties that can work together to bring tough monsters down.
[edit] Japanese-only release
Unfortunately seeing as the game is only available in Japan at the moment, to get it you have to order it online (if located outside of Japan), or download the ISO for custom firmware. Currently there are a few English patches out for the game that translate most of the Japanese to English. The newest patch by HotGamersMom was released recently and converts almost everything.
Another thing that will take some getting used to in this version is because the game is from Japan, the buttons (X) and (O) buttons are now switched. That means that yes is (O) and no is (X). As such, entering the Gathering Hall (Online) is enabled by the button (X) rather than (O). There has been speculation that the patch team will be upgrading it to accommodate for American players.
- Update* A new version of this game is available outside of Japan, which instead of Monster Hunter Freedom 2nd G, is titled "Monster Hunter Freedom Unite."
