 Rathalos Guide
 By Breezy
(original can be found here
- Elemental Weakness: Ice, Dragon and Water (Ice being most effective, followed quite closely by dragon element.) Weaknesses are pending on which form of Rathalos, Azure being weakest to Dragon and Silver being weakest to Lightning.
- Weakest Points: Head, Neck and Legs (Head being weakest) This also changes with each variation of the wyvern. Silver Rathalos' weakest points are the wings.
- Breakable Parts: Head horns, Wing claws, Tail
The Rathalos is an aggressive flying Wyvern, the male counterpart of a Rathian. It is more partial to the skies than the ground, so as a hunter be wary and look to the skies! Many fire related attacks makes this guy a pain in the ass, but have no fear, they can be easily evaded...with a little bit of skill. Very territorial, there aren't many areas of the FnH that he doesn't visit. There are 3 different Rathalos types: Red (rust colour), Azure, and Silver. Silver rathalos can only be fought in high or G ranked quest levels. WIth a bit of practice you'll be hunting these Wyverns with a simple hunting knife - yes, you can be that good!!
.Running Charge : The Rathalos will charge quickly towards you. (Even quicker in rage mode). Can be easily avoided by rolling , or diving (can be blocked). The Rathalos will always fall over at the end of the charge although High ranked rathalos can stop the charge and perform another move such as a still bite, flying, a turn and another charge, a launch backwards with a fireball, or a tail spin. It is common for any high rank rathalos to perform another move instead of falling over. They can stop abruptly and try to bite you.
Roar : When you deal a certain amount of damage, the Rathalos will go into rage mode. You will know when this has happened because the Rathalos will lean back and rear up onto his legs and roar loudly. This does no damage to you, but, without earplug, or high grade earplug, will cause your hunter to cover his/her ears, giving the Rathalos a chance to charge at you.
- Necrus's Notes: You can also block this roar with a guard, doing a jump dive, or being far out of range
Airborne Fireball : The Rathalos will hover above the ground and shoot 1-3 fireballs depending on whether or not it is in rage mode. This attack can be avoided by standing under the Rathalos (stand on the shadow he makes)
Poison Attack: The Rathalos will act as though he will do an Airbore fireball, but instead swoop down to you, poisoning you, dealing much damage (can be blocked)
Still Bite : The Rathalos will thrust its neck outwards in an attempt to bite you. This can be avoided by rolling or diving (can be blocked)
Rush Bite : The Rathalos will act as if he is about to charge, but will then rush towards you a small distance and bite. This can be avoided by rolling or diving (can be blocked)
Flying attack/swoop : The Rathalos will randomly fly around the area a few times, and then fly straight towards you and try to hit you. Can be avoided by rolling or diving. (Can be blocked)
Foot scratch : The Rathalos will stand still, make a small roar and scratch the ground with its foot, this wont affect you unless you are standing under his tail or body (perfect time to attack!)
Fly-Backwards Fireball : The Rathalos will fly backwards and shoot a fireball at you at the same time. Can be very damaging but can be avoided by rolling or diving (can be blocked)
 Items to bring
Play It Safe!
- 10 potions
- 10 mega potions
- 10 herbs
- 10 whetstones
- 30 paintballs (if you don’t have autotracker)
- 5 welldone steaks
- 5 rare steaks, 8 tranq bombs
- a shock trap
- a pitfall trap (and if you want, items to make more)
All of the items are optional, but it would be stupid not to take the basics. Please make an effort to take most f these if you are fighting Rathalos for the first time, after that you won't need as much because you'll gain experience and confidence quickly.
 Area info
Thanks to help, noob in need, i have realised that i need to highlight the problems of area 9 FnH. It is a very small area and can lead to immediate death at the claws of a Rathalos. As Already said, the bes area to fight him in is area 3. Area 4 is also good because there are no other monsters. If the Rathalos flies to area 9, follow it there (you have to be good at rolling, diving and controlling the camera). You must try to use the same tactic as before, but stay in one of the ends of the area, NOT the tunnelley bit as it is way too cramped to maneover.
- Necrus's notes: In Area 9, try to lure him to there other side of it through the tunnel (the side without the dead animal). It's a larger area and your chances of survival are much higher.
 The Strategy
This strategy should work with all weapon types (except bows and bowguns, as you can continuously attack). G-Rank, Guild or Village elder, Azure, Silver, or just plain boring red... hopefully this should help you beat him! Autotracker helps fighting him because he likes to fly a lot! High fire resistance also helps. If you are fighting a G-Rank Rathalos, earplug is a must. I will explain the strategy as if I am using a greatsword (but remember, this should work for all weapon types). Find the Rathalos, paintball it if necessary, and then let it attack (obviously don’t let yourself get hit). If fighting him in the FnH, go to area 3, as there are no other monsters.
When the Rathalos charges and falls over at the end of the charge, if he turns around quickly, he’s going to charge again, so get ready to run. But if he turns around slowly, he is going to fire a fireball so run up to the side of his head and do a downslash, and an upslash (if your weapon is powerful enough, he will have flinched by now, don’t do a charge attack, it doesn’t work as well) Repeat again and again throughout the battle. After you’ve broken his face, go for the tail, when he charges, run after him and when he’s getting up, slash or poke, or bash at the tail, after a few of these the tail will come off. Next, go for the wings. Set the pitfall trap down and stand so that it is between you and the rathalos. Hopefully he charges (if he shoots a fireball, just roll) into the trap. Slash at his wings and the claws should break. Throughout the battle, he will begin to fly. Immediately stand under his shadow as he is most likely trying to hit you with an airborne fireball. If he is in rage mode, he will shoot three, while he is in normal mode, he will shoot one. Once you know he is finished, run out from under his shadow (another good way to cut his tail off is to attack it as he is coming down), to avoid the wind block. Pound his head using the earlier tactic until he begins to limp. Now you either have the option to kill or capture. I always capture as you get more items.
[CAPTURE METHOD] Let him go to area 5. Let him go to sleep. Kill the velocipreys. Set the shock trap as close as you can next to him. Kick him (using the ‘select’ button on your psp) to wake him up. Stand just behind the shock trap (so it is between you and him) he should charge. Throw 2 tranq bombs. Success!
[KILL METHOD] Let him go to are 5. Let him go to sleep. Charge your GS, unleash onto his head. Hopefully you have one DEAD Rathalos! Image

Rathalos/Rathian Hunting Guide
Composed by Necrus
- The Rathalos
- Elemental Weakness: Ice, Dragon and Water (Order from greatest to least)
- Weakest Points: Head, Neck and Legs (Order from weakest to strongest)
- Breakable Parts: Head horns, Wing claws, Tail
Tactic: Try to stay on his sides, don't stay infront of the Rathalos for long because it will become hard to read his attacks. Never go under the wyvern and attack his feet because it will also become difficult to dodge or read his attacks. He uses air attacks more often than the female Rathian. Flash Bombs work effectively on the wyvern is used correctly. Shock Traps and Wyvern Pitfalls are also very useful. When fighting in Area 9, try to lure him to the other side of the area without the dead animal - it's a bigger field of battle and your chances of survival there are increased.
>>> Ground Attacks <<<
1. Rush Attack/Tackle
This is where the Rathalos will run at your with full speed, attempting to tackle you down. He uses this attack frequently. You can know when the Rathalos is about to rush you when he turns towards you two times quickly, if you right in front of him or under him it is difficult to tell so try to stay to his sides. When he is rushing toward you, run around behind him and follow him, if you are close enough to can use the small window of time while he is recovering for a free attack. It will take practice to know when it's safe to engage and when it's better to leave him alone. If you are inexperienced it may be best to avoid attacking him during or after this attack.
This is where the Rathalos will shot a single fireball in a straight line, causing fire damage. You can tell when the Rathalos is about to fire when he turns towards you slowly twice, it's different from the rush attack and with time and a watchful eye you can see the difference easily. When he does this, run to his sides and get a quick head hit on him then dodge away or guard.
The Rathalos will use a bite attack where he lifts his head up and bites down in a downward-side attack, it's usually not that powerful and you will only be hit if you are directly in front of him and close, the attack doesn't last a long time and the following attack usually comes quickly so if you are inexperienced don't use this as a window of time to attack.
4. Tail whip
This attack is where the Rathalos will circle around twice, swinging his tail. To avoid this roll under the tail, this must be done in good timing or else it will fail. With practice you can get in a few hits while avoiding the tail. This attack becomes much easier to dodge and avoid when the tail is cut off. An alteritave to dodging is rolling away from the tail range assuming you are far enough to do so. You can also roll under the wyvern, if you are directly under it, the tail should reach you - but don't stay under for too long or else the other attacks such as 'rush' will hit you.
5. Battle Taunt
The Rathalos will kick up dirt and raise his head to give a suttle and quiet call out. This is the time you should use to heal up, or get free attacks. I use this time for the tail, but beware that the dirt it kicks up will damage you without flinching so keep an eye on your health. His tail also spins around in the first few moments of the taunt so it could hit you back if you attack too soon behind him. Safe isn't place to aim for is the side of his body so you can read and dodge is next attack - experiened players should aim for the head and either guard or dodge when the taunt is done.
6. Overhead Swoop
The Rathalos will sometimes appear to do a fireball, but instead fly over your head. This does no damage and doesn't hurt you but the wind-press could get you. Just follow the Rathalos to the other side of the area and go from there. His does this attack most often in Area 10
7. Wyvern Roar
This is a annoying attack to those without the skill 'earplug.' This will stun you long enouh for the Rathalos to get a free hit on you... if you are far enough away it won't get you, you can also avoid this by doing a jump dive, you can also guard to block it or get an armor with Earplug such as Horntuar. Usually following this attack the Rathalos becomes enraged which increases his speed and attack power so watch out! :P
>>> Air Attacks <<<
1. Single Fireball
The Rathalos will fire one fireball downward at you, you can go under him where his shadow is to avoid the attack but once its done you should leave or else the wind-press will stun you! If you have a greatsword you can charge it up at the right time to get a free charged shot, same can apply with other weapons too.
2. Triple Fireball
The Rathalos will fire three fireballs in order, do NOT jump dive to avoid this or else the other two will hit you. Just keep running to dodge them or get under his shadow like mention with the Single Fireball
3. Talon Dive
The Rathalos will put his talons back and dive toward you, this attack is very powerful and will poison you. To you can either be under his shadow to avoid or jump dive right before he attacks.
4. Hit and Run
The Rathalos will fly around the area for a while and eventually come down to attack in a fast swoop then fly off again to return seconds later.
5. Change Areas
The Rathalos will fly off into a new area. NOTE: You can tell if the Rathalos is about to change areas if when he is in air he slowly accends farther up past your view. You will notice it when you see it
>>> Using Flash Bombs <<<
When the Rathalos is stunned with a Flash Bomb, he will randomly use Battle Taunt and Tail Whip. To be safe, wait until he uses Battle Taunt then attack.
